Cool Gadgets

Computer

Once you have gone Mac, you can never go back! I have used both PC and Mac and I have found Mac easier to use as a person with physical limitations. I am currently using a MacBook Pro with the word prediction programe called Co-CoWriter. The inbuilt Mac shortcuts make it easy to navigate around the computer system.

Also I communicate regularly through my Mac's text-to-speech function. I operate my laptop through the regular keyboard with a keyguard laid over the top preventing me from pressing multiple buttons accidentally.

Camera

I use a Canon 5D Mark II with a cable release, it is a really impressive camera. However, the only down fall is when you using Live View the "Half Press Auto Focus" doesn't work on the cable release. You need to press a small button on the back of the camera every time you need to use Auto Focus in Live View. However, this camera produces amazing images and video.

Wheelchair

I have used Glide electric wheelchairs all my life. I have found these wheelchairs sturdy and reliable, they will take you anywhere you can reasonably expect a electric wheelchair to go. Mine even drove away without even a scratch after a tree fell on it... GO THE GLIDE!!!

Off Road Buggy

Sometimes adventure calls for more than an indoor chair... Sometimes you have to rough it to make youself feel alive. That is where the HippoCampe comes into play, beach, snow or forest. I have experienced all of these places with the help of a few strong friends!!!

Laptop Stand

When I am at home I spend the majority of my time on the floor. This is because I can move around freely on my knees and don't have to rely on other people as much. My office is all floor level making me more independent. I have found the perfect solution for a stand to lift my laptop above my knees to prevent back pain. The solution is a simple wire shoe stand from Howard's Storage World... Pretty high tech!

Customised Tripod

Unfortunately my camera tripod that attaches to my wheelchair was custom made by my Dad and Uncle. Sorry, but I couldn't find anything on the market to cater for this need...

Tripod Head

I use a normal friction ball tripod head. I align my camera with my left hand and forehead. The beauty of a friction tripod head is the fact you can get someone to adjust the friction just enough so you can move the camera but you don't have to worry about locking it into place.

Mobile Phone

I have a BlackBerry Bold which I have found easy to operate with my left hand. As much as I love Mac, I just can't physically use their touch screen devices.

Walker

In the past I could never use a standard walker because my athetoid spasms would just pick the walker up and I would fall backwards. However I discovered forearm walkers which I can operate really well. By resting my forearms on the walker and grasping the handles with my hands I find it physicallly impossible to pick it up.

The Voice

I use a communication device called a LightWriter. It is light and compact so I have the ability to take it anywhere I go...
